Praying for Elected Officials: The Best Political Conversation

Praying for elected officials

Elected officials may ask for our votes, but they really need our prayers. Praying for elected officials is by far the most impactful thing we can do to help our country. Perhaps, the greatest thing we can do for anyone is pray. We often take for granted one of the most amazing things we ever get to do. Think about how amazing prayer is, we get to go before God – the creator of the universe – and talk about whatever is on our minds! This is truly a great blessing!

Prayer is too Great to be Stingy!

Since prayer is so amazing, we shouldn’t be stingy with it! It’s not as if prayer cost us anything, so why shouldn’t we pray for people often? I want people to pray for me, so I should pray for others! Prayer is so powerful it is only logical for us to pray for people! The apostle Paul teaches us to be generous with our prayers when we read 1 Timothy 2:1.

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,

1 Timothy 2:1

Paul wants us to pray all types of prayers for all types of people![1] Prayer is something every person needs! Especially our elected officials.

Praying for Elected Officials

Since prayer is so powerful, it makes sense to pray for people who are in positions of power. Especially when they have to make decisions that impact our lives. Not only does it make sense but it is something God wants us to do! This is how 1 Timothy 2 continues in verse 2.

for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

1 Timothy 2:2 ESV

God is not asking for us to do anything outlandish, rather he is asking us to do something that will not only benefit government officials but will actually benefit us as well! Praying for elected officials is the most important political conversation we can be a part of, because the conversation is with God, almighty.

Praying for Elected Officials: So, we will be Blessed

It is our responsibility to serve God and live godly lives no matter what our government chooses to do. However, by praying for them we are more likely to be blessed with peace and quiet, making our service to God more comfortable. Government officials make important decisions that impact us on a regular basis. We must pray that God will guide them to make decisions that will help His church thrive.

Praying for Elected Officials: So, they will be Blessed

As we continue to look at 1 Timothy 2, we notice another reason why praying for our elected officials should be important, it is pleasing to God.

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,

1 Timothy 2:3

It is good and God is pleased when we pray for those who are in authority. Anytime something is explicitly stated as being pleasing to God, it should be something we do regularly. Praying for elected officials needs to be a habit. I think the next verse, 1 Timothy 2:4, helps us understand why this is pleasing to God.

who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

1 Timothy 2:4

God wants all people to be saved, therefore we should pray for all people to be saved, this includes governing officials. It doesn’t matter what party they are affiliated with; God wants them to be saved. The United States have seemed so divided lately, but God wants everyone to be united in His church. We need to pray for the souls of our leaders, so they may learn the Truth of Jesus Christ and be added to the church.

We need to pray for them so we may live peaceable lives, but this is not near as important as praying that they will learn the truth of the gospel. Praying for the souls of others must be a priority, especially the souls of elected officials. After all, Jesus died for everyone, this includes politicians.

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.”

1 Timothy 2:5-6

Praying for our President(s)

We are at the end of a chapter in our history as the United States. Where one president’s time in office is coming to an end and another’s time is about to begin. They both need our prayers. We need to pray that our president, no matter who he is, comes “to the knowledge of truth” and is saved. There is nothing that could have a bigger impact on our country for good, than if the president was a Christian.

Think or Discuss:

  • Why is prayer so powerful?
  • Why is it important to pray for elected officials?
  • Have you ever prayed that our elected officials would become a Christian?
  • Will you say a prayer on behalf of our government leaders, right now?
